Home Maintenance Tips for Fall

Although the sun hasn't stopped shining in the Okanagan, cooler temperatures and longer days are upon us.  For those of us who don't live in a maintenance free community like Cadence at The Lakes, that often means raking leaves, lots and lots of leaves.  On top of that, there are a variety of other important seasonal home maintenance tasks that should be taken care of every fall, regardless of where you live.  Keeping your own personal skill and safety limitations in mind, here are some items to put on your seasonal maintenance calendar according to our friends at National Home Warranty:

  • Check windows and doors on the exterior for possible air or water leaks; make sure the weep holes are clear at the bottom on the outside.
  • Inspect caulking around windows for cracks or separation from the window or building.
  • Check the roof for loose shingles, tiles, or shakes.  Make sure vents are in good condition and are not blocked with debris.
  • If you have large trees or shrubs close to the home, make sure they are trimmed back to avoid branches damaging the exterior of the home, the shingles, or interfering with vents.
  • Check for leaves and debris in gutters and eavestroughs and check for blockages at the down-pipe connections.
  • Vacuum and clean out forced air registers (vents) and ductwork in your home.
  • Turn your outside water outlets off and drain exterior faucets of water.
  • Remove the hoses and any other attachments for the hosebib itself.
  • Check all of the vents outside your home: the combustion vent intake, the dryer vent, and the range hood vent.  Make sure they are all clear, functional, and the screens are clean.
  • Check CO (Carbon Monoxide) detectors, if installed.

For more detailed information and other handy home maintenance tips, please visit the National Home Warranty website.  And then, once you're done reading on the internet, get back out there and finish your raking (unless you live at Cadence, then you can do whatever you want)!

Okanagan Fruit: What To Do With Your Summer Bounty

Now that summer's in full swing, we hope you've had the opportunity to visit some of the markets we mentioned in our previous post.  If not a farmer's market, perhaps you've been to one of the many fruit stands sprinkled throughout the valley, or maybe you just know someone with a backyard full of overflowing fruit trees?  No matter how you acquired your delicious Okanagan bounty, you're probably wondering what to do with it all.  Fortunately, there are many different ways to enjoy the spoils of the summer, this season and beyond:

Get Your Bake (or Drink) On

This may seem obvious, but one of the best ways to get the most out of your extra fruit is by incorporating them into your favourite summer recipes.  Grilled nectarines and melon, while unconventional, pair wonderfully with BBQ.  A batch of blueberry and peach muffins is a great way to utilize multiple fruits for a satisfying snack, plus they can easily be frozen for enjoyment later on.  You could also try freezing some strawberry and watermelon chunks, then blend and mix with sparkling water for a delicious and refreshing summer beverage.  And finally, remember that fruit salad can be so much more than cantelope and honeydew melon.  Jazz up those old standbys with some of your favourite berries and stone fruits, add squirt of lemon juice to keep the colours fresh, and top with whipped cream for a special treat.  The culinary possibilities are endless if you're feeling creative (and have access to Google).

Can & Jam

You may have memories of someone in your family standing in the kitchen, toiling over a boiling pot, surrounded by piles of fruit and stacks of jars.  Well what's old is new again, and canning and jamming have certainly made a comeback.  By turning our delicious local produce into jam, jellies, pickles, or spreads, our sandwiches and charcuterie boards just got that much better.  And it doesn't have to cost a fortune either; a basic canning kit can start around $50, or you could try sourcing one second-hand from your local classifieds.  Don't forget that homemade condiments make excellent gifts, so you can save yourself some money (and time) down the road by keeping a stash of your favourite creations on hand.

Save It for Later

Besides canning and jamming, another great way to make your seasonal goodies last is by freezing or dehydrating them.  In fact, you can even freeze your items first and then dehydrate them later!  Not only are these both delicious ways to prepare convenient, healthy snacks on the go (think smoothies or fruit leather, for example), they are both excellent methods for preserving as much of the produce's natural nutritional value as possible while maintaining shelf life.  Looking to add some extra fiber to your diet?  Frozen and/or dehydrated food is great for that because you haven't lost any of the beneficial properties to standard industry processing practices.  You also get bonus points for controlling the amount of added sugar that goes into your food.  So it's a win, win, win, win situation overall!

When you live at Cadence at The Lakes Adult Community, the Okanagan's bounty is, literally, right outside your door.  With several well-stocked fruit stands directly along the road to home, no matter which route you take, our residents always have access to everything that's fresh and in-season.  This is especially convenient, as the kitchens at Cadence are spacious and well equipped, which means it's easy to enjoy that wonderful harvest all year long.

What's Up Lake Country

Summer is officially here and that means it's time for some warm weather fun!  Whether you're entertaining family or guests, or just looking for something different to do on the weekend, here's a roundup of a variety of events taking place throughout Lake Country and the greater Okanagan this summer.

MARKETS

In the Okanagan, and Lake Country especially, fresh fruit and vegetables abound!  Add a thriving local craft/artisan scene, and you have a recipe for some seriously fantastic Farmers Markets:

MUSIC etc

What pairs better with Okanagan sunshine than live music?  Well, wine, maybe, but there's a good chance you can have that too if you'd like!  This summer's offerings includes opera, country, classic rock, and pretty much everything in between:

FESTIVALS etc

The Okanagan certainly has a lot to celebrate.  From food & beverages to arts & culture, there's almost always something delicious/fun happening around the valley:

So no matter where your interests lie, be it food, music, or festivals, you're sure to find something fun to add your schedule this summer.  As long as you can also find the time, that is!  At Cadence at The Lakes Adult Community, you are central to everything the Okanagan has to offer, including all the great activities taking place this season and beyond.  Life certainly is good here when it's lived at your own rhythm!

New Off-Leash Dog Park Network in Lake Country

Love spending time outdoors with your furry friends?  Or, perhaps, you love spending time outdoors without other people's furry friends?  Either way, the District of Lake Country has been listening to you when they started developing a network of new off-leash dog parks and beaches throughout the community:
“Extensive community engagement identified the need to improve the way people with and without dogs share our parks and beaches,” said Greg Buchholz, Director of Infrastructure Services. “A proposed off-leash dog park network has been developed for the community with consideration to site suitability, sufficient parking, accessibility, neighbouring land uses and other potential park uses.”
This is exciting news for everyone who enjoys the ample recreation opportunities available in Lake Country, especially those with four-legged companions.  In addition to the off-leash park and beach that were created during the development of the Pelmewash Parkway, the District has even more plans to expand their dog park network:

Easy Winter Getaways from YLW

Dreaming of a winter escape?  Like many Canadians in February and March, you might be.  Although our beautiful country, and the Okanagan in particular, offer a vast array of amazing outdoor activities this time of year, a little hit of warmer weather is always welcome.  So, where to go?  With ten different airlines and over seventy flights leaving the Kelowna International Airport (YLW) daily, there are plenty of opportunities to get yourself some extra vitamin D this winter.

Phoenix, USA

Serviced by WestJet.  It's no secret that Canadian Snowbirds love Arizona.  Fly into Phoenix, the state's capital city, to enjoy plenty of warm weather and year-round sunshine.  From there, you can explore other popular cities such as Sedona, Tuscon, Yuma, and Mesa.  The Grand Canyon, naturally, is also a must-see, as well as Saguaro National Park.

Cancún, Mexico

Serviced by WestJet, Air Transat, and Sunwing Airlines.  Cancún has long been a popular travel destination for Canadians.  Located along the coast of the Caribbean Sea in the Yucatán Peninsula, Cancún's soft sand and blue skies will wow you.  Famous for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, Cancún is also the gateway to the Mayan Riviera, which includes other popular tourist destinations such as Playa del Carmen and the island of Cozumel, as well as the ancient Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá, Coba, and Tulum.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Serviced by WestJet and Sunwing Airlines.  When you think of Los Cabos, you usually think of Cabo San Lucas, an energetic city associated with family fun and spring break mania.  The municipality of Los Cabos, however, also encompasses the neighbouring city of San José del Cabo, which has more of a relaxed, artistic vibe.  Fortunately, the two cities are connected by a quick drive down a beautiful sea-side highway, which means it's easy to get the best of both worlds.  Be sure to check out Land's End and 'El Arco' while you're visiting.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Serviced by WestJet and Air Transat.  Located along the Pacific coast, old world charm melds with modern convenience in this popular sea-side tourist destination.  Take a stroll along the Malecón to see the beautiful contemporary sculptures Puerto Vallarta is famous for, or cruise northward to shop at the bustling weekly markets in Bucerías and La Cruz.  A trip to the surf town of Sayulita offers ample shopping and people watching if you've got the extra time.

Varadero, Cuba

Serviced by Sunwing Airlines.  Located on the northern coast of the Republic of Cuba, Varadero is a cheerful resort community with over 20km of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.  With stunning beaches of soft white sand and sparkling turquoise water, you might never want to leave your lounger or snorkel.  If you do, however, you will likely be delighted by the warmth of the local people and the history of the area.
